Weekend storm update
We have a lot of information to go over for this weekend storm system which will lead us into a fairly active pattern again. There is a lot to this system and a lot of moving parts. Hopefully some of the stores still have some ice melt left in between the Easter, garden planting, and swimming pool stuff... welcome to New England...
TIMING- This is where things get a bit confusing.
Friday night 11pm- Storm system moves into the region from the northwest. This will likely start off as frozen precipitation for northern Vermont.
By midnight, precipitation will likely have moved into western Massachusetts and be pushing east into central VT right up to the NH border.
By 2am Saturday, snow will be falling through much of central and northern VT, NH and likely reaching into western Maine. Rain showers will move into CT and the western half of MA.
By 5am Saturday, just rain showers will be falling in southern New England while rain and freezing rain begin to mix in for central and southern VT. Light snow will be falling across much of the southern portion of Maine.
8am Saturday, moderate to heavy snow will be falling through northern VT and NH, through western Maine all the way to the coast. This is where we will see the most accumulating snow. Freezing rain and plain rain will move through southern VT and NH with not a whole lot of action for far northern Maine at this point.
11am Saturday, moderate snowfall continues for northern NH and western ME while the rain/mix/freezing rain line jumps around well up into northern VT and NH including southwestern Maine by this point.
This will all continue through most of Saturday afternoon right up into the evening. The snow will likely switch over to sleet and freezing rain by around 5pm.
As we head into Sunday, freezing rain will work its way north into northern Maine while freezing rain and rain continue to switch back and forth right down to the Mass border and potentially just below it.
As we get to later Sunday night and into Monday morning, another burst of precipitation will work its way into southern New England and spread northeast. This will include plain rain and some more freezing rain for the higher elevations and northern areas.
This takes us into Tuesday where what looks like a disorganized storm system will pass through with heavy rain showers.
I won't lie, I'm a little concerned about the freezing rain and the ice accretion. Forecast modeling is showing ice accretion of upwards of 3/4 of an inch to over an inch of ice. I find this hard to believe given the expected temps, however, even the experts at the NWS are putting out maps showing a fairly wide area expecting up to a quarter inch possible of ice with a lot of isolated areas that could see up to a half inch. That's ice buildup, not just freezing rain amounts.
