Weather Update- Next few days
Well, Winter Storm Gianna decided to head out to sea even further it looks like from recent modeling, so I wouldn’t go and sit in a parking lot with the plow on waiting for flakes to fall. My updated map is being very generous with the accumulation.
Winds are also not expected to be as bad. Still some strong gusts, but we aren’t really looking at the severity we were a few days ago.
Over the next few days, we will see more sun and higher temps. We will still be below freezing for the most part, but not as cold during the day.
This opens up the opportunity for ice jams to form on your roof, more than during the past week. Ice jams form from warm air inside heating up the lower layer of snow on the roof. As water starts to run down the roof, it collects on the lower eaves where it refreezes. If you have giant icicles forming, you have an ice dam. The problem is that once it backs up the roofline to the area where it gets heat from below, that water with nowhere else to go can start to seep into your home. I once had water coming from my roof collecting in the ceiling of my kitchen of the first floor as it was running down between the walls.
If you find that you have damaged gutters, or they are full of ice causing an ice dam, give our friends at Udderly Gutters a call. They will come out and use steam to remove the ice and clear out your gutters so that water has somewhere else to go.
